Aquarium Setup

Professional Aquarium Setup From Start to Finish

Call Moby Dick Pet Store at (248) 673-2520

Setting up an aquarium involves more than choosing a tank and adding water. You need to consider where it will be placed, whether the floor can support the weight, what filtration equipment you’ll need, and how you will hide the equipment for a seamless appearance.

Start With the Right Location

Choosing the right location is the first step. In general, it’s best to keep tanks away from windows and direct sunlight, where algae growth and temperature fluctuations can pose a risk.

If you’re planning to install a large aquarium, one big concern is whether your floor can support the weight. Water weighs more than eight pounds per gallon before you add the tank, stand, rock, substrate and equipment. We make it easy by assessing your space and determining whether the size is appropriate – or safe – for the location. Plus, we make sure your aquarium is properly level during installation.

From 10 Gallons to Custom Showpieces

Moby Dick works with aquariums ranging from approximately 10 gallons to 400–500 gallons, and we’ve consulted on systems as large as 1,500 gallons.

We install and maintain both glass and acrylic aquariums. We often recommend glass for its durability and scratch resistance. However, acrylic is lighter which makes it more suitable for large tanks. Moby Dick can also move tanks weighing up to approximately 500 pounds, and we do it all by hand.

We will help you design the right environment and select appropriate fish, filtration, lighting and equipment, whether you’re looking for a freshwater, saltwater, reef, planted, specialty or turtle tank.

Make Your Aquarium Part of the Room

A beautiful aquarium is more than a fish tank; it’s the focal point and a piece of furniture.

Moby Dick offers custom stands and canopies and can coordinate with other professionals for more elaborate installations. A finish carpenter can help create built-in designs, framing and cabinetry that complement your existing doors, paint, stain and décor. Plumbing professionals are also available when custom plumbing is required.

Your aquarium setup can include:

  • Custom stands, cabinets and canopies
  • Built-in or through-wall aquariums
  • Hidden plumbing, filtration and wiring
  • Two-sided aquarium designs
  • Custom cabinetry and trim
  • Glass, mesh, hinged and door-style canopy options

How Smart Should Your Aquarium Be?

Modern aquarium technology can make owning a tank easier. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi lighting and monitoring systems such as Apex and Hydros can help control or monitor lights, outlets, timers, heaters, pumps and sensors.

Some systems can even send alerts when temperatures become too high or low or when the power goes out. But more technology also adds expense and complexity to the setup.

If you feel overwhelmed, or your budget doesn’t support a fancy setup right away, rest assured, we can get you set up with the essentials now, and then you can make upgrades over time.

We Bring Water as Part of Installations

For saltwater installations, Moby Dick can bring RO/DI and saltwater directly to your property, with the water priced the same as it is in the store.

Freshwater tanks can often use properly treated tap water, but not every water source is appropriate. Certain well water, water containing contaminants such as arsenic, and softened water may present problems. We also sell and deliver freshwater directly to your property when using your home’s water isn’t the best option.

Avoid Common Aquarium Setup Mistakes

Professional aquarium setup ensures you don’t make costly mistakes, such as:

  • Choosing the wrong location
  • Installing an un-level aquarium
  • Undersizing your filtration or pumps
  • Providing insufficient water flow
  • Choosing incompatible fish
  • Adding livestock too soon
  • Failing to provide backup equipment

We often recommend erring on the side of caution with additional filtration and flow, as well as redundancy for critical pumps.

We can’t stress having patience enough. Aquariums need time to establish before they’re ready for fish. Think of Moby Dick as your instruction manual. And because we know how your aquarium was installed, we can more easily help troubleshoot problems later.
