About: Millipedes are a slow-moving, segmented arthropod found all across the world. Even though their name means “a thousand feet,” most species have between 40 and 400 legs, with two pairs of jointed legs on most body segments. They are harmless to humans, do not bite, and play an essential role in nature as detritivores by eating decaying plant matter.
The lifespan and size of a millipede will depend on what species you get, so it’s important to do extra research to determine if they will fit your lifestyle. Most millipede species live between 2-7 years and most sizes are around 2-5 inches, with the exception of some species that are around 8-16 inches.
Millipedes are communal, and often enjoy being in groups, but they can also be housed alone and be happy.
Lighting: Most pet millipedes thrive in a temperature range of 70°F to 80°F. Standard indoor temperatures are usually ideal for common North American and popular species. There are a few tropical species that like higher temperatures in the upper 80s.
Tank: A good millipede tank needs a secure lid, deep damp soil for burrowing, and floor space rather than height. A 5-to-10-gallon glass tank or a plastic Kritter Keeper works well for small to medium species, while giant species need a larger space. You should also have a secure lid to prevent them from escaping.
Millipedes like to dig and often hide underground, so they should have at least 3-6 inches of substrate to dig in. The best substrate is usually a mix of coconut husk and dirt. This will help hold in moisture, since most millipedes like a humidity of about 60-80%.
It is important to not put an actual bowl of water in their enclosure, to prevent drowning or leg rot.
