Amazon milk frogs are fairly small frogs native to northern rainforests of South America. They typically only grow to around two to four inches when they reach maturity.
While they can live alone, milk frogs tend to be very social animals and thrive in groups of 3-6 frogs. They are often very docile and tend to live to be ten years or older in captivity.
Frogs can absorb liquid and moisture through their skin, so it is advised to avoid handling them if possible. If handling is required, be sure to wear gloves, or wash your hands before and after to avoid oils or harmful bacteria touching the frog.
Lighting: Providing a UVB light is highly recommended and beneficial for milk frogs. UVB rays can help synthesize vitamin D, which leads to the increase of bone structure and growth. UVB will also help any live plants grow and thrive in your tank.
Milk frogs will need a small heat lamp, the light should be kept on one side of the tank to create a heat gradient in the tank. There should be a daytime tempergjaature of 75-80°F (23-26°C), with a nighttime temperature of around 70°F (21°C).
Tank: A 20 gallon high is considered the minimum size for one adult milk frog. If you choose to have a group or pair of frogs, you will need a larger tank to adequately give them enough living space. Frogs prefer height over length, (ex. A 20 gallon high instead of a 20 gallon long) so giving them a taller tank is better. Milk frogs thrive in high humidity of around 70-80%. Having moss, as well as substrate that holds moisture well, can help keep the humidity stable. A mix of coconut coir, and any reptile-safe dirt or soil will help hold humidity. There should also be plenty of foliage and sticks for the frog to hide in, to help create a safe and comfortable habitat.
Feeding and Watering: Due to the fact that milk frogs require high humidity, the tank may need to be misted every day or every other day. A good way to tell what the humidity is, is by using a hydrometer, which measures the moisture in the air.
Frogs need a water dish large enough for them to soak in, because they absorb water through their skin.
Milk frogs can eat a variety of insects depending on their size. A good way to tell what size insect you need is to choose one that fits between the width of your frogs eyes. Any gut loaded insect like crickets, fruit flies, or roaches will be a healthy choice.
